An oxymoron is a contradiction in terms.  You know, jumbo shrimp or artificial grass?

With this in mind let’s take a look at the word organization.  By definition it is a body of people with a particular purpose.  Most businesses are referred to at one time or another as an organization.

Is your business organization structured, ordered and functioning as a whole?  Is it complete in itself?  If not, it just may be an oxymoron.

When advertising giant David Ogilvy hired or promoted someone at his advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather, he sent them a Matrioshka doll.  They’re also known as nesting dolls.

When the intended recipient opened it, and kept on opening each doll from the largest outside doll to the last and smallest doll, they would find a message that said, “If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs. But if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, we shall become a company of giants.”

To put another spin on this story, remember, your organization is supported by all kinds of people with all kinds of skills.  Do they all fit together into a single cohesive entity your customers and prospective customers see as an organization?

In the movie Hugo directed by Martin Scorsese, the title character Hugo Cabret said, “Machines never come with any extra parts, you know. They always come with the exact amount they need.”

Ask yourself today if everyone within your organization belongs there.  What is their purpose?  With whom do they interact with?  And, most importantly, how do they represent your business everyday: As a company of giants or, as an oxymoron?

Your marketing shouldn’t have any extra parts.  All of your people are all part of your marketing.  Talk to us today if this isn’t the case within your organization.
